Our history
Born from a need to work together.
The Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institutional Libraries began through a regional university cooperation movement led by the Association of Caribbean Universities.
In 1969, librarians gathered in Puerto Rico for the first conference of university and research libraries in the region. An independent association was voted into existence, with Dr. Alma Theodora Jordan as first President, Dr. Albertina Pérez de Rosa as Vice-President, and Luisa Vigo-Cepeda as Secretary-Treasurer.
As ACURIL grew, it expanded to embrace all kinds of institutions serving research and public access throughout the Caribbean.
